15/02 Shibuya

My day started with a little breakfast in bed, since I don't really have a table in my room and there are no seats in the kitchen my bed will be my dining area for the next few months. And to be honest, I don't mind at all 😅

After my breakfast, I got ready to go to Shibuya. I cleaned the shared bathroom because it was so dirty I didn't want to put anything down before I cleaned it. And then I got ready.

Shibuya is one of the many districts of Tokyo. But it is one of the most popular and busy districts. I started my day at Shibuya crossing, which is the biggest crossing in the whole world.

I was really overwelmed and google maps was not on my side, so I walked around for a bit. I really love to walk around and go on my 'fingerspitzengefühl'. Also I think Bruges could learn from Shibuya, the whole shopping district had speakers blasting Taylor Swift albums on repeat. I absolutely loved it! My first stop was Ikea, since I still needed some things for my dorm. After walking around a bit more I came across Hachiko (the famous dog statue).

After some more walking around and shopping I needed some food, and I knew exactly what I wanted... Kura revolving sushi belt. The waiting time was around 35 minutes but I didn't mind since we could sit down to wait. I struggled a bit to put the tablet in English but when I did no one could stop me anymore :) I ordered a couple plates and waited for my sushi to arrive on the belt. The sushi was the best I had ever had and I only paid 7 euros for 8 plates of sushi!!

After the food I wanted some peace, so I went to Miyashita park. This is basically a 4 storey building that feels like you are in a meditation class. The first 3 floors are mostly craftshops and cosy cafés, the whole building had calming music playing and the vibe there was so extremely different from the rest of Shibuya. The top floor was an amazing rooftop garden that was so calm and you could see that a lot of people used this as a place to escape to for some peace and quiet.

I had an iced latte so I could charge my phone at the café for a bit. I need my phone for so many things here in Tokyo that I have to recharge it 2-3 times a day. 😲 And running out of battery is no option because the key of my dorm is also on my phone.

And so the shopping spree went on, I went in to some more stores until I got a bit tired.

There was one last thing that I wanted to do now that it was dark outside, go to Shibuya Sky. An amazing viewpoint at the top of the biggest building in the area. Unfortunately when I got there, the tickets were all sold out for today. Better luck next time!

I took the metro back home and installed all of my new Ikea stuff. And right now I'm relaxing in my room that is getting quite cosy and writing this blog whilst eating a bag of very weird flavoured chips that I just guessed would be nice because my translater wouldn't work in the store. Goodnight! 😚

25/04 Exploring Kyoto by bike

This morning we woke up early, we had a private bike tour booked with Ted. His real name was a very difficult Japanese name so we could just call him Ted haha.  The bike tour was so nice, it really changed my view of Kyoto completely. Our hotel was quite a bit out of the city center and so I felt as though Kyoto was a bit dead, but during the bike tour I saw the complete opposite. We started with some very nice temples and Ted knew a great deal about them. Grandma had a hard time understanding him because he had a very special accent and he mumbled quite a bit so I had to listen extra careful and translate everything for her.  We then biked trough the Geisha district, I do not have any pictures of the Geisha because they really don't like it when tourists take pictures without permission but we did see 2 of them. It's sad that some of the districts now oficially had to forbid tourists because they kept invading the Geishas privacy and behaving really distrespectful....

Internship week 8

This week will be the last week of my internship. It breaks my heart to think about it so I wanted to enjoy this week as much as possible. And I sure did exactly that! We were still doing the badges unit this week and it was so much fun! During the week the kids started building shapes in math and they got some really challenging ones done to earn the badges!  For UOI we had kerbal space program, a game where you have to build your own rocket and make it fly. It takes a whole lot of skills to build the perfect rocket and even more to make sure it doesn't crash. The kids were so motivated to make it work and they loved playing a videogame in class. And ofcourse we loved it too because they were motivated to learn an work! I try to make my own rocket and make it fly but lets say I still have some learning to do...maybe one day when I use it in my own classroom I might figure it out? 😅 The other option for UOI badges was making actual rockets, we started with learning how to ai...

20/04 Grandma arrived + spring carnival

This morning I headed to the airport quite early. My grandma was arriving and I was going to pick her up. I was very exited to see her again and show her my life here. She had some trouble with her flights but got here around 11:30a.m.  When she arrived we took the metro to Nerima, for these first few days she would be staying in a hotel close to the school and my dorm. It was funny because the moment we got on the metro she started talking very loud and I was like 'ssst, oma! people don't talk on the metro here' and she was so confused haha. She ended up learning a lot more weird rules Japanese people have that day like standing left on the elevator, no eating/drinking while walking, no shaking hands when you meet someone... We checked in her luggage at the hotel and headed to Aoba. They had spring carnival going on and I was expected to be there so I asked if grandma could come along. Spring carnival is basically a big festival in the school: kids perform, foodtrucks, fa...
